Lichenologist 22: 81 (1990). T: Walls of Jerusalem Natl Park, near Dixons Kingdom, Tas., 1290 m, on living and dead leafy twigs of Athrotaxis cupressoides in open montane conifer forest, 29 Jan. 1989, W. & M.Galloway; holo: HO; iso: BM, NSW, WELT.
Thallus subfruticose, cerebriform, pale yellow, byssoid, rather granular at the surface, up to c. 15 mm wide, composed of short irregular coalescing lobes 0.4–2.5 mm wide. Hyphae very thick-walled, 4–6 µm wide; lumen c. 0.5 µm wide. Photobiont cells 6–10 µm diam. Apothecia subglobose, immarginate, 0.4–1.2 mm diam., frequently compound, pale cream-coloured to pinkish, smooth, glossy or somewhat pruinose. Epithecium pale yellow-brown, granular, colourless in KOH. Hymenium hyaline, 20–35 µm thick. Hypothecium hyaline, c. 20 µm thick. Asci cylindrical to clavate, 19–30 × 5–10 µm. Paraphyses sparingly branched, rather short and robust, 0.9–2.0 µm thick. Ascospores simple, globose, 2.5–5.0 µm diam. Pycnidia scattered on the upper surface of the thallus, usually abundant, 60–100 µm diam. Conidia ellipsoidal, 3.0–4.5 × 1.5–2.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus K–, KC–. C–, Pd+ red, UV–; containing protocetraric acid (major), usnic acid (trace) and virensic acid (trace).
Confined to alpine elevations in Tas., occurring on the leafy twigs of endemic conifer species, especially Athrotaxis cupressoides and Diselma archeri. It is widespread in the western regions of the Central Plateau, and is most common in locally moister sites such as at the margins of lakes and tarns or in raised Sphagnum bogs; also in New Zealand.
